Defending Jacob (William Landay) ***

I hadn’t read a legal “mystery” in a while, so I looked forward to reading this that came recommended by…. some source I’ve since forgotten. The story is good enough—entertaining enough—- enough. But for some reason (admittedly perhaps because the protagonist reminds me too much of a police officer I know), this reads more as a detective novel than an attorney novel. Even the primary character’s son at one point refers to his father, the second-in-charge district attorney, as a cop. That alone highlights the confused identity the book, as a book, seems to have.
Still, as I said, it was entertaining enough. I applaud any book that can surprise me, as this one did.
It fulfilled just what I was looking for with a book over the past month—– interesting enough and entertaining enough to hold my attention. It’s not going to change lives. Ad it’s by no means a literary masterpiece. But it’s good—-certainly good enough.

Staying thoughtful?
