The Sessions ****

The Sessions is a charming film about love, respect, and the need for intimacy. It evokes a sense of kindness and patience that simply leaves you feeling good—no matter how the inevitable ending of the story arrives.

John Hawkes as Mark is superb in his role, showing the depth of a human no matter the package. And Helen Hunt—as Cheryl—gently shines unlike she has for a while (even if her accent and eye work is a bit distracting). Her quiet sense of compassion and warmth, in the midst of Cheryl’s more chaotic personal life, give credence to her work. I loved the juxtaposition of Mark’s story, needing and wanting touch, as it was shared in confession with Father Brendan—-the Father’s own similar silent path of never-to-be-met-desire showing on his face. William H. Macy managed to say a great deal in a limited number of lines in his portrayal of Father Brendan.

The movie is quiet. It is touching. It is a glimpse into a kinder side of people. Truly, it is a joy.
