Reflective Media Reviews

It Follows ***

Horror. For the most part, this isn’t my typical genre I prefer when seeing movies. As much as I loved the original Halloween, Friday the 13th, and I’m sure others (although I *still* have never visited Elm Street or played with Chucky), at some point, everything became too formulaic and predictable. The fright was less. The suspense lacked. The genre fell off my radar.

It Follows, however, had great buzz. So I dragged my movie companion along to check it out. And bless his heart, but we seem to have a bad pattern of movies at SunRay with bizarre endings (such as with Interstellar, reviewed here.)

But don’t write off the film just yet. For the most part, It Follows did just what it was supposed to do: it had a great element of fright. It made me at least once cover my eyes. I jumped visibly more than once. And I’m certain my shoulders hunched up toward my ears as our dear teen on the screen tried so hard to escape what was following her. (But although the movie promises some sex with an alien, it’s really not quite what it sounds like.)

The premise is different; we don’t have the maniac killer chasing teens with an ax or knife or what-have-you. We have It. Not that I really know what It is. But It is scary. And odd. And hard to explain.

And yes, It follows. And that was just enough to creep me out and agree that this is a much better horror movie than what you usually get these days.
