I had no idea how much I would enjoy this movie. But I did. As with another seen that week, the theme was nostalgia. And again, it worked.
Creed is, essentially, Rocky retold. But Rocky worked for what it was. And so does Creed. Granted, it is a typical boxing movie. And I’m not at all a fan of boxing (or wrestling or fighting of any sort). But this isn’t really a movie about boxing; it’s a movie about a boxer. A man. His struggles. It’s a movie with all the themes one would expect from such a movie. But it’s not too cliché. And it is not too simple. It’s also not too complex. It’s popcorn. It’s entertainment. It is nostalgia.
Yes, Sylvester Stallone is back. And he is what we would expect. But that reappearance of a beloved original character, just like in that other movie this week, is needed to properly pass the torch.
I’m not saying this is a must-see flick. But if you want to have fun, shed a tear or two (as, of course, I did), cheer for the underdog, and enjoy some of the familiar big-music soundtrack blended with the modern, then spend a couple of hours and enjoy Creed.
