Dark. Twisted. Vulgar. Peculiar.
The Paperboy takes you on a journey I’m not sure I was ready for—-or one that left me feeling I had not been anywhere worthy of a postcard. It is gritty in a way that allows you to feel the humidity of the southern Florida swamps while it glimpses sex and sexual tones in ways most only would if they could without ever discussing it—and without looking you in the eye.
The narration is strange, first as true narration but then as if she’s sitting by your side, telling you the secrets that she shouldn’t have, couldn’t have known.
John Cusack is utterly creepy. Zac Efron is grown up. Nicole Kidman exudes cheap sexuality and desperation. And Matthew McConaughey is dark.
I don’t recommend it; however, I also don’t not recommend it. But know, going in, that it’s different.
