Funny Girl was a joy to read. Light. Easy. Funny. And different.
Set in the 60s, the novel follows the early career path of a young lady in England who wants an acting career—in comedy. Lucille Ball is her hero. Television is her goal. So the subject matter being an unknown (and inexperienced) actress pursuing a BBC sitcom, in the 60s, as you can imagine indeed brings something different.
There’s humor and romance and friendships and exploration of social issues. The characters are layered and arrive together from several avenues, all bringing their own color and interest to the pages. The story arc makes sense and while easy to follow, never feels simplistic or dull. It’s simply enjoyable.
If you’re looking for a light read as the summer ends, I definitely recommend this book. It’s not a deep or necessarily great thought-provoker, but it is entertaining.
